The Architecture and Gardens of Cordoba

Cordoba is a historic town in Andalucia, Spain. The ancient capital of the Caliphate of Cordoba is now a city with many buildings and monuments of great cultural interest, some of them World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

One of the most important buildings and certainly significant of the city is the Mosque of Cordoba. The magnificent mosque, built by various emirs between eighth and tenth centuries, was partially destroyed, and in 1236 was rebuilt as a cathedral. But part of the original structure still stands, and is one of the best examples of the grandeur of architecture. From above you can see the old Arab and Jewish neighborhoods. In the territory of the former mosque is beautiful and refreshing the famous Patio de los Naranjos.

If one walks through the historic city will enjoy the history of several cultures that have blended into the city. Apart from the famous mosque, there is also the synagogue of Córdoba, dating from the fourteenth century. In this city we can find churches Fernandine and style of the thirteenth century.

Of the other culturally and historically significant buildings we can find the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the fourteenth century, the Viana Palace with its impressive courtyard, the sixteenth century, and the towers of Calahorra and Muslim and Christian periods. In this city also highlights the Plaza Vieja, sometimes known as the Plaza Mayor.

The old city is a great example of architecture from centuries ago, with its mosques, synagogues and churches, some large and ducal palaces. The city is also full of gardens, among which the Victory Garden and the Garden of Rivas Duc.

The city is situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir River, and nearby is an ancient Roman bridge. There are also several old mills that have survived until today, and many other ancient bridges.

Around town, you can find many statues of figures such as Seneca, Maimonides and many other philosophers and poets. Moreover, the Palace will find the statues of the Catholic Kings and Christopher Columbus. There are also the monument of Christ of the Lanterns and the Island of Sculptures.
