Vancouver, the City of the Olympics, Skyscrapers and Parks

Vancouver is one of the most important cities in Canada. Vancouver is on the part of British Columbia, a beautiful region full of mountains. From the day February 12, 2010 here are celebrating the Olympic Winter Games.

Vancouver is a beautiful city full of mountains, and is a really big city, full of many theaters, museums and galleries. The panorama of Vancouver known for its skyscrapers reflected in the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Vancouver is a city located on the coast, and is the largest metropolitan area of western Canada. Vancouver became a city in 1886 when it began to expand. This is due to the fact that the city is a port city, Port Metro Vancouver is the largest port and largest in Canada.

The city has been the host city of many events of great importance. For example, here there was a United Nations conference in 1976, while ten years later, in 1986, here was held the World Exhibition of Transport and Communications. This year, in 2010, here are celebrating the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games of 2010, which are taking place both in Vancouver and in the nearby town of Whistler.

The Burrard Bridge is one of the bridges crossing False Creek. It is a bridge built and completed in the Art Deco style, dating from the 1930s. As a tribute to Canadian prisoners of war of the First World War that were heated by fire, there are two sculptures of two huge flames on each side of the bridge. And the bridge is decorated with busts of Captain George Vancouver, whom the city owes its name, and Sir Harry Burrard Neale. Another famous bridge of 1292 meters long is the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Bridge Crossing, built in memory of workers who died in the collapse of the first bridge.

Some of the most famous buildings in the city are the Cathedral of Christ Church. The church was opened in 1888, although was completed until 1906. The Hotel Vancouver, a beautiful and large building about 111 meters high, is the third hotel of that name, and was built in 1936. The hotel became famous for his radio broadcasts in which listeners could hear the best bands, some of them playing in the Panorama Roof Ballroom.

Another site that stands out in this city is the Plaza Robson, a central square where the Vancouver Art Gallery, which houses the finest collections of art in the region. During the winter, citizens and tourists in the city can enjoy a skating rink outside. In the Plaza of the Vancouver Library is the building of the huge library of eight plants.

Some of the most beautiful buildings, modern and outstanding in the region are the famous Harbor Centre, a huge building 177 meters tall, with a large observatory with 360 degree visibility and a revolving restaurant, or the courts of Vancouver. The Canada Place was formerly the Canada Pavilion for World Expo 1986. Inside the old flag is the convention center, cruise terminal, most of them heading towards Alaska and even a hotel.

The oldest part of town is full of beautiful buildings of Edwardian architecture, reminiscent of typical commercial buildings of the British Empire. Some of the most important buildings and high are the Dominion Building, part of Gastown, near Victoria Square, a building with a red and yellow façade dating back to 1907, Sun Tower, 82 1911 meters, which for a time was the tallest building in the Empire. Other important buildings are the Marine Building, decorated in a beautiful Art Deco style, and the Living Shangri La, a building of 201 meters with a spa, apartments, a hotel, part of the Vancouver Art Gallery and a public park.

Gastown is a historic city, one of the oldest neighborhoods. Here for years has formed a more open culture, with over 300 bars open before the ban. The region re-emerged in 1960 and is notable for its ancient architecture, its famous steam clock, a great curiosity for all citizens and visitors, and its cosmopolitan atmosphere. Nearby are other picturesque neighborhoods like Chinatown and Strathcona.

The city is full of parks. Highlights Stanley Park, a huge park bordered by the sea and several lakes, including the Lost Lagoon, which is full of gardens, such as Shakespeare, monuments like the statue of Lord Stanley and several ancient totems. Other parks are the Parque de la Reina Isabel, with several golf courses and tennis courts, and Van Dusen Botanical Gardens, full of totems and all kinds of plants. From the various observatories of the city you can enjoy wonderful views towards the mountains, forests and ocean.
