Alaska, Gold Seekers and Nature

Date June 25, 2010

Alaska is a land of adventurers and pioneers, if you’re looking for a taste of the typical American Adventures Here you will find as much of its territory is completely wild.

In this land of icy mixtures Indian tribes are the descendants old American who came to this area, mainly hunters.

There are several places not to be missed in Alaska as well as their forests because they are immense, not to be missed Anchorage, where we can see real cowboys taverns, Talkeetna, one of the sites where we can fly in Cessna aircraft. In Delani N.P. the safari is required to observe the bears and hiking.

The McCarthy Road, also known as the road end of the world, is another of those experiences that should live. The road was once a railroad track, whose beams have been erected and filled with gravel, the road goes from Chitina, the last city of the civilized world as it is known … and that is constituted by a pair of wooden houses to Kennicot.

Along this road for about 100 miles we can find the nails and the remains of the old roads that come to the surface during the thaw … so we have to carry several spare tires. In fact, over a journey of nearly six hours we will see that there are several abandoned cars on that ground, and were able to collect about 14 spikes about 15 cm. so the chances of puncturing are many. But the journey is worth it, because it is making a journey as in the past, with all its incidents, get into the beautiful Wrangell mountains, cross rivers and bridges to cross them, they’re scared to have to do with a car.

At the end we will find a camping area and parking. To visit the town of McCarthy must go on foot, near the mine Kennicot. McCarthy was mine for gold and now is open only for tourism. If we are going to spend a few days camping there is to know that the place does not have any services of any kind: no running water, no electricity, no restrooms, are camping in the open and live the closest to nature is. In the town of Mc Carthy if there is a small hotel adapted for the tourists and their needs, yes to the restrictions typical of the place we are visiting, for example … there are showers, but can only be used in the evening and each one should carry your own towel.

In the tavern you will find drinks and pizza, at exorbitant prices, but trapped in these latitudes, how can you expect?

The Kennicot ghost town and mine, is another unknown places outside the United States and not to be missed on a visit to Alaska. Do not forget that Alaska was the land of gold diggers. Today some of these mines are closed. Go into the Wrangell Mountains, we find Kennicot mine and ghost town with the same name … the past, the mountain which was full of copper is what gave rise to the birth of this town and the town of Mc Carthy as road we have mentioned before and which owes its fame to be the only route that connected the civilized world population and whose train was used for the transport of copper. The city was abandoned in 1938 when its people weary of isolation decided to leave the place and stopped working also with copper.
Visit this ghost city is like a trip through time, half the buildings and houses are clear signs of decline, the other half is being restored slowly, the homes are allowed entry, not to the old mine since it is quite dangerous and to visit there to hire experienced guides.

This was the home of the miners working there today can still see the remains and debris from the copper mine, large rock pillars that should not be confused with other belonging to the nearby huge Glacial Root.

In Kenai, we can see whales, dolphins, sea lions and glaciers … in a boat trip or travel by airplane. The Kenai Peninsula is famous for its marine wildlife and glaciers that flow into the ocean, boats at a safe distance from the glaciers can afford to see a spectacular picture, and the fracture of some piece of the glacier, the sound of shock and the image of falling water becoming an iceberg, and the movement of this once it has detached is simply amazing, it’s one of the most popular places for this reason, nature lovers will enjoy a great time here.

In Seward’s strong point is the visit is Mount Marathon, and the ability to camp anywhere in the country of bears, or do routes up the mountain with the bike, all claims should be enough to visit this state.
